New strategic partnership for creating sustainable value

Neoenergia joins, in yet another new partnership with the Iberdrola group, to create Carbon2Nature Brazil. The initiative reinforces corporate strategies and diversifies the project network, generating sustainable value and profitability. The joint venture has a 49% stake in Neoenergia and 51% in Carbon2Nature.

The agreement accelerates the development of conservation, sustainable management and restoration projects in the main ecosystems in Brazil, a key country for the development of nature-based solutions.

One of the main objectives of Carbon2Nature Brazil is to develop partnerships and projects that capture carbon through nature-based solutions, generating a positive impact on biodiversity, climate and local communities, as well as promoting a sustainable economy.

Nature-based solutions

Terrestrial (forests, savannas, grasslands, etc.) and ocean ecosystems (mangroves, ocean grasslands, saltwater swamps, etc.) are the main allies in the fight against climate change, acting as climate regulators, being natural carbon sinks and absorbing more than half of annual anthropogenic carbon emissions. In this context, nature-based solutions are effective strategies to address global emissions neutralization challenges and targets.

Carbon2Nature Brazil focuses on implementing projects for the reforestation of deforested areas, through replanting, forest management, and control and safety monitoring, as well as rehabilitating and conserving mangroves, important ecosystems, known as blue carbon, valuing the variety and natural wealth of the Brazilian territory.

The estimate for the coming years is to capture more than 10 million tons of CO2, considering a tree density of 15 million trees spread over 19 thousand hectares.

Through a partnership with the LIFE Institute, signed in 2019, Neoenergia works to build a diagnosis of biodiversity in generation companies.

The actions include pilot projects to apply the methodology to hydroelectric companies and Termopernambuco, thus reinforcing the company's commitment to the theme of biodiversity and to the preservation of natural resources.

These projects aim to generate high-quality certified carbon credits and promote socio-environmental co-benefits, contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Projeto Muçununga

Em uma parceria inédita com a Biomas, a Carbon2Nature Brasil, tornou-se codesenvolvedora do Projeto Muçununga para restauração de cerca de 1,2 mil de hectares de Mata Atlântica em oito municípios do sul da Bahia.

Serão plantadas quase 2 milhões de mudas até 2027, com mais de 70 espécies nativas, como araçá, copaíba, guapuruvu, ipê-amarelo e jatobá. Essa grande variedade garante a recuperação de corredores ecológicos, beneficiando o ecossistema natural e gerando mais valor ao projeto. A área a ser reflorestada equivale a 1,2 mil campos de futebol.

A iniciativa terá investimento da ordem de R$ 56 milhões, sendo 50% da Carbon2Nature Brasil, uma contribuição equivalente a R$ 13,7 milhões. Além de restaurar o ecossistema e recuperar a biodiversidade, o projeto apoiará o desenvolvimento socioeconômico local, estimulando novas oportunidades para a geração de renda.

Crédito de carbono

Como as florestas removem volumes significativos de CO2 da atmosfera, o modelo de negócio do projeto prevê que a restauração seja financiada pelos créditos de carbono que serão gerados nas áreas recuperada.

A expectativa é de que este projeto gere aproximadamente 525 mil créditos de carbono em 40 anos. Cada crédito de carbono representa uma tonelada de CO2 que foi removida da atmosfera.
